Esomeprazole, also known as Nexium, is an oral medication used to treat stomach and esophagus ulcers caused by a condition called Helicobacter pylori (Hp) infections. It belongs to a class of medications called proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). It is used to prevent stomach acid from reaching the stomach. It works by decreasing the amount of acid that the stomach produces.
It is important to note that Nexium is not a cure for Hp. However, it can help heal acid damage caused by gastric acid reflux disease (GAD) and ulcers caused by chronic gastric acid reflux disease (GADUL).
Nexium is usually taken by mouth twice a day. This medication should be taken at the same time each day. It works by helping to reduce acid production in the stomach and esophagus.
